Head Local Learning to Blog, Philanthropy, Etc

05/29/2008 16:50 Mountian

Hello Friends,

Head Local of Locals Have More Fun - An Environmentally Cool Clothing Company is slaving away in his cubicle, working hard in order to get a major clothing company off the ground. It is late Thursday afternoon and in 40 minutes I will be free for the weekend.
Lots of Locals work to do on Friday, but looking forward to a great weekend of getting outside as well.

As a newbie blogger/social media artist, I have tapped into the local community to help. Kendall Card of Basecamp Communications is a rockstar blogger and has even made a job out of it. Who would of thought? He linked the local ProBar to hottie Marisa Miller (she is hot) and her diet and voila, a star is born!

Anyways, it has been a productive day. Contacting Zappo's, cousin Har in Santa Fe, and tackling the financial markets (see SBUX popping off a rounded bottom). That leads me to the Philanthropy part of today's post. Working at a non-environmentally friendly, ignorant company to pay the bills at Locals only fuels the fire more to educate the masses about the world's playgrounds and how they must be protected.

I am proud to say that I have been a member of Sierra Club since the late 90's (I was still in college) and that Locals Have More Fun is a part of and a huge proponent of 1% For the Planet (see Patagonia).

Off to talk to the last client of the day.

Local Back in Action

05/28/08 15:00 Mountain

Hello Friends,

I came across a very funny blog today commenting on life in a a cubicle. It's title is Death Box Hell - Life in a Cubicle.

Locals Have More Fun is depicting life outside that box. I don't mind if you work in the box, but there MUST be time for you to get out and clear your mind. Wether you work in New York Boston, Los Angeles, Pheonix, there must be an outdoor recreation nearby.

Chicago for example has urban adventure races - The Wild Onion. New York has Central Park, Los Angeles has Santa Monica. Phoenix has Camelback.

The list goes on and on and on. 45 minutes of heart pounding exercise. There is nothing wrong with a spin class at the gym.

****

The title of today's post is Local Back in Action, meaning back in workout mode in Park City and the surrounding area. After a weekend of eating the best pizza in the world at Aiello's, I have to get the cholesterol OUT! The weekend should be beautiful and the lower elevation mountain bike trails are calling. Maybe the 24/7 loop in Jeremy Ranch.

Whatever your favorite exercise option is, go do it!! A few hours for yourself and you will be ready to tackle that cubicle and the week ahead!!

Have a great week,
Brian

Locals Vacation - Not Missing Mud Season!

05/22/2008 15:00 MST

Hello Friends,

It is Memorial Day weekend and 2 inches of snow fell last evening.
I am heading to Pittsburgh - GO PENS!! to see family. Definitely not going to miss the mid 50's/rain/snow/mix over this holiday weekend.

That is why they call it mud season. This weather is not good for the mountain biking trails. Speaking of mountain biking, my business partner/local artist is hard at work on Locals Have More Fun's first biking art. We picked a female hitting the trails. She should be finished in time for his trip to Moab and for the summer season.

Locals has a lot of great things looming on the horizon. A potential deal with Leading Edge Northwest Sales Agency - very exciting!! Also, shirts will be delivered to Young Riders - a non-profit to get kids introduced to mountain biking in Park City.

Have a great, safe holiday weekend!

Mt. Olympus - Epic Spring Hike

05/16/2008 23:15pm

Hello Friends,

Your favorite head local had a busy morning of phone calls, business meetings and account visits. One of those meetings was with Mike at Black Diamond, a friend and outdoor apparel industry expert whom I met on a rafting trip on the Middle Fork of the Salmon (epic trip and guides). Mike and I talked business while looking up at the Wasatch Range and Twin Peaks. He was glad to get out of the office and enjoy the bluebird day with sun beating down - 81 degrees!

After visiting my last account of the day at Centered City Yoga, a very funky, great vibe yoga studio in Sugarhouse, I made it downtown to do a few errands. All the while I had my eye on the mountains thinking about the workout that was soon to come.

A few Clif Bars (apple cranberry are my fav) and then my phone rings. It is Vid Rowan from SkiTown.com - A Mountain Resort Guide. This site peaked my interest during a recent internet foray as it provides information regarding the going-ons in and around ski resort towns. Obviously I thought about the synergies between Locals Have More Fun, A Environmentally Cool Clothing Company that depicts the locals lifestyle in these exact towns. Vid and I had a great conversation regarding the benefits of SkiTown.com working with a clothing supplier that is a member of 1% For the Planet - allowing Locals Have More Fun to donate a percentage of our revenues to various organizations positioned in or near different ski resort towns.

All in all it was a great day and the hike hadn't even begun. Before I started, I had one more piece of business (besides more Clif Bars - information regarding this still to come). I had to email Dave at Into The Markets and tell him about the Redirect Guide - The Healthy and Sustainable Business Directory and Lifestyle Guide. An account rep was looking for an environmentally friendly investment consultant/financial adivsor/investment education company. Into the Markets also donates a percentage of their proceeds to protecting the environment.

Business is finished for the day! I set out at 14:30 and head up, up, up. It is hot, but as I get deeper into the canyon and higher, the vegetation and altitude provide some relief. Waterfalls, the smell of pine, and mud! Spring runoff is coming down and the trail is overtaken by water, then by snow, then by DEEP snow. The last 500 yards to the saddle is knee deep snow. There is a lot of snow still in the Wasatch front - the rivers must be raging!!

I meet up with 3 other people at the saddle and take off for a scramble to the top (the snow was gone, but the water made the rock pretty slippery).

At the summit of Mt. Olympus, the views were breathtaking. It wasn't the steep drop to the Salt Lake Valley (the trail rises 4500 feet in just 3.5 miles - serious vert). But the views east and south towards the Cottonwood Canyons. So much snow still covering the wonderful backcountry skiing that these canyons provide. North we could see the mountains around Snowbasin and Powder Mountain.

It was a crystal clear day in more than one aspect - mentally cleansing, the air was clean, and Locals Have More Fun through various strokes of good fortune is able to see the future more clearly.

Have a great weekend!

Snow, Sun, Snow

Hello Friends,

Another cylce of 72 degree days, followed by 30 degree nights with snow. Are we finished? I don't know, but the rivers are going to be raging. Lots of melting snow means a fun-filled and lengthy boating season. Not to mention a greater than normal percentage of water that is sitting in our lakes and resevoirs.

Speaking of water, I have been in touch with my freshman college roomate, Jeff. (Go Buffs!) He works for Wildcatch.com Wildcatch is an MSC certifited company, meaning that everything they do related to fishing meets the regulations of the MSC. Its a big deal in seafood, and expensive to get. They also work directly with 4 different fishing coop's in Alaska, on basically a fair trade deal, but since AK is a state we cant get these coops fair trade status. It works for all parties involved. The coop are all native fishers, so Wildcatch is the only company to give these guys a fair price on their fish. Plans are in place to be carbon neutral - a task that Jeff says is "a pain in the ass, but will be worth it in the end".

This makes me want to go out and get a hard core workout in and then order some MSC certified salmon in order to pack in the protein!

Speaking of working out, Locals Have More Fun had another eco fair this past weekend. Lugging t-shirts to and from my hybrid car to the staging point is quite the workout. Locals had a great showing and met some potentially important strategic alliances, namely, the Salt Lake Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Salt Lake Chamber. Locals is looking to do some co-branding and provide these organizations with our organic cotton, recycled cotton, and bamboo t-shirts.

Should be a great weekend for getting outside. Maybe a hike in the SLC foothills or the southern facing hiking/biking trails near Jeremy Ranch.

Have a great week and GO PENS!

Local Sunday in Park City

05/04/2008 12:43 Mountain

Hello Friends,

A lazy day in Park City as it is a somewhat overcast, chilly day. I ran to Home Depot to get some supplies as I will be moving from my condo which I rent to a newly purchased home. One more step to becoming head local is local ownership. Home Depot has some great prices due to the slowdown in the homebuilding sector.

Upon returning home I watched The 11th Hour while doing an hour of yoga. Cleansing my mind for the week ahead while watching a movie about the end of our species and due to human error, the end of lots of other species as well. Just as I recently heard Jane Goodall speaking about deforestation, it is hard to be pessimistic regarding our society and future when you see films such as The 11th Hour. The film is produced and narrated by Leonard DiCaprio.

One theme of the movie is being proud about where you live and take the necessary action to promote the well being of your community. That is a major goal of Locals Have More Fun and its plan to be a major force in educating communities about their choices when it comes to sustainable living. It is this exact reason that Locals has joined 1% For The Planet so it can distribute a portion of its sales to various organizations in a multitude of locations.

So for the Head Local, it is a day of watching the Penguins finish off the Rangers and move on to meet the Flyers. It is also a day to finish my weekend agenda of Locals Have More Fun paper work.

Have a great day!

A Link to an Article in the Head Local's Favorite Magazine

05/03/2008 20:30 Mountain Time

Hello Friends,

Today will be a quick post as I have been working hard on customer account lists and cleaning out old files. Locals Have More Fun is growing and we are now ready for an outside sales rep to take our product and our message to the mountain west region. I say "message" because our core values state that everyone involved in with our product from our suppliers to our distributors will be an educational voice in the war against stealing from our children and our children's children.

I did get outside for a quick run today and on the way back (into the wind of course) I ran by by friend San San. Always good to see a friend when you are trying to do a negative into the wind.

OK - back to the point of today's title. Outside Magazine has is the head local's favorite magazine and I as I was cleaning out my files, I came across a very funny article by Eric Hansen. Have a read.

Have fun,
Brian

Shoulder Season Continues

05/01/2008 14:00

It is the first of May and it snowed 1' in Park City and 15" in Snowbird. A few years back, while living in Chicago, I would be getting ready to head to the Derby for a weekend of mint juleps with the boys. Since I am now head local in Park City, I am going to take advantage of yet another spring storm and head out for a sunrise skin at Deer Valley.

The plan is to be at the Silver Lake parking lot at 6am and head straight up the Sterling Lift line.
I did this last week (see Locals Shoulder Season post from last Friday). There are 3 nobs on Little Reb and Nabob - the last nob was windblown last week. Should be a little better this week as it hasn't been to windy and it stayed cool since the snow fell yesterday and today. Staying close to the trees provides about 25 sweet turns that should be protected from the wind.

For the evening locals fuel up, head to 1/2 price sushi and local beer in Kimball Junction and catch the Penguins sweeping the Rangers.
