First Snow

Resident local photographer, otherwise know as Local Photographer #2 decided to head up to Guardsman's pass this past week to enjoy the snow and fall foliage high in the Wasatch Mountains.
After a very dry summer, we seem to be getting a little rain and a very early snow!
Is this a sign of things to come? In this wacky world (see presidential election and financial markets (in no particular order)) one never knows if participation will fall from the sky. It could be a deluge, it could be a drought.
We should all practice conservation as practice does make for repitition which makes for remembering. It is like the organic cotton bags I keep in my car. My wife and I remember them when we walk into the grocery store, but we forget when walking into Wal-Mart, Costco, Home Depot.
What did I say? Wal-Mart, Costco, Home Depot? Yes, not very local places. I do support local businesses and I have gone to green building centers and local grocery stores and at times, it makes sense to use the big boys. Due to the sagging economy, they are practically giving things away and not making you pay for it for years! I can save money and donate a larger portion to our non-profits.
The point of all this is that the more you practice doing the right environmental things, the more it becomes habit and the easier it is to pass that on to others.
By the way, have you ever wanted to jump into someone's idling car while they are in the bank, Starbucks, etc.. and turn off the keys. My wife has had to hold me back. One of these days, I will do it.

2007/2008 Snowsports Retail Report

The 2007/2008 snowsports season generated $2.97 billion in sales of snowsports equipment, apparel and accessories in specialty stores and on the Internet, according to the 2008 SIA Intelligence Report.
Broken out, equipment sales added up to $834 million, while apparel brought in $1.165 billion and accessories $973 million.
The report also found:
Specialty shop sales increased 3 percent in units and 5 percent in dollars over last season to $1.9 billion.
2007/2008 Internet sales increased 39 percent in units and 46 percent in dollars.
Chain store data was back in 2007/2008 with snowsports sales totaling $616 million -- 15 percent higher than in 2005/2006, the last season measured.
26 million people consider themselves snowsports participants in the United States, but 9 million did not participate in 2007.
The National Ski Areas Association reported 60.5 million skier/rider visits in the United States during the 2007/2008 season -- a new record.

Learning about trends in the apparel industry let's one pick up cool terms such as:
"Liquid-ness" and/or "Wet-effect"
Having to do with drape and softness
i.e. Those Locals Have More Fun female bamboo shirts hug her curves; it looks like her t-shirt is wet.
Let's relate "Liquid-ness" to sport.
i.e. Those Locals Have More Fun boys look so liquid in 18 inches of fresh powder.
Either way, seems like positive vibes to me.

It Has Been A Really Long While

The title refers to my blogging absence but also refers to the water situation in the Wasatch Front region of Utah. Namely, Salt Lake City, Ogden, Provo, and Park City.
It has rained about 4 days since June. Thank goodness for the plentiful snow year as our resevoirs are full, but since snow in mid-June, NADA!
Lawns are brown and if the aren't then I am speculating that people aren't listening to the water restrictions that are on the radio and in the newspapers.
I just purchased my home and having some major work to do in the backyard have decided NOT to use my sprinkler system. I spoke with Gorgoza Mutual and they are asking others to do the same or at least limit their usage as we are WAY OVER our daily allotment!!
Check your taps for leakage. Check your water bills and see where you can conserve.
You make the choice!

It's Been A While

Moving, Vacation, Summertime.
These are busy times in Park City. Locals have abundant options:
Playing, like our friend Cam below - he is putting in ont the Payette River
Listening to music: Check out the Mountain Town Stages calendar
Yardwork - there won't be any pictures of me in my wife beater pulling weeds out of a lawn gone brown due to our rainless summer
Houseparties and BBQ's - no pictures of me with Sangria and veggie burgers
Working a real job - no pictures of my cubicle either, although the cubicle has helped to spring
Working the Locals Have More Fun gig. Which is turning out to be quite the busy summer:
Park Silly Sunday Market - August 17th and 31st
MAGIC in Viva las Vegas!! (the premier sourcing show for the apparel industry)
OUTDOOR RETAILER DEBUT - August 8th - 11th - THE LOCALS INDUSTRY DEBUT!!!!!!
Regardless of what you choose to do, make a pledge to do something positive:
-watering your lawns early in the morning or late in the evening
--even better, figuring out an irrigation system
-carpooling
--even better riding your bike more
--sucking it up and trading in the truck for a car

Becoming a Local

It is time to celebrate being an American.
A huge part of the American dream is buying a home. I did just that a few months ago and finally moved in this past weekend. The American Dream - here I come!!
I have prepared myself for what a home means. Forget the yardwork and the fixer uppers, I am talking about the major breakdowns - like my garage door.
There are positives about owning your own land - composting. I am very excited to purchase my urban composter from Recycle Utah. I also will not have to drive to Recycle Utah's recycling drop off due to Curb It Recycling. They pick up at your home for a small fee.
I will be sure to give constant updates on the American Dream and any nightmare's involved.

Now for an important programming note:
Locals Have More Fun will be sponsoring Mountain Town Stages free Deer Valley Wednesday night concert. The Joy and Eric Band will be playing - a fantastic duo. We will hope the thunderclouds stay away and a large crowd joins us at Snow Park Lodge for the outdoor concert.
Friday, be sure to stop by for Pancake's in city park and see the Locals "green" tent. We will have new merchandise to show off - male mountain bikers and hoodies as well as a new color for females: sky
To all of the Park Silly Sunday Market attendees, both local and tourists - thank you. Thanks for spending time learning about our company and vision.
On top of moving and all of the Locals events, I have my first "summer in Maine" trip as well as my other business - Into the Markets.
